Much of the counterculture and West Coast folk were mightily inspired by the mythos of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth during the late 1960s and 70s – from the mountainous homes of the Elves, the recreational use of ‘Pipe Weed’ and most importantly the connection with nature itself – his characters became icons of the Hippie generation.
